How to Choose a Surveillance Vehicle

Surveillance is often a large part of a private investigator’s day, and much of that surveillance takes place in a surveillance vehicle. But choosing the right vehicle for the job could make or break your case.
Here are some top tips for choosing a good surveillance vehicle.
Choose the Right Vehicle for the Job
When it comes to surveillance vehicles, one size most definitely does not fit all. A private investigator needs access to multiple vehicles so they can choose the most appropriate vehicle for each situation. A beat-up, muddy 4×4 works great in a rural countryside spot, but choose that same vehicle in town and you’ll stick out like a sore thumb.
Is the Vehicle Forgettable?
Well, it should be. Brand new cars will stand out more than those that are 3-5 years old, although the vehicle shouldn’t have any dents or marks that make it noticeable. Meanwhile, the colour makes a huge difference. Avoid flashy reds or yellows and opt for an earthy, unremarkable colour like brown, beige or grey. Remove any stickers, ensure the number plate is unexceptional and make sure the vehicle isn’t too clean or too dirty.
A Little Tint
A good surveillance vehicle needs tinted windows in the rear so you can sit in the back almost unnoticed. Make sure it’s a natural, factory tint and avoid anything too dark which could be problematic if you’re working at dawn or dusk.
Comfort
If you’re going to be using your vehicle for long periods at a time it needs to be comfortable to sit in, good to drive and easy to park – having several attempts to reverse-park in a small space will make you stand out!
A PI’s surveillance vehicle is an essential tool, an office and sometimes a PI’s best friend – make sure you choose wisely.
